20 GATES IN KENT

In the narrow lanes of rural Kent, known for its history of hops and apple orchards, people have set up homes and businesses.

These are simple properties, many with a single or a few mobile homes dotted around the site. Some are ornately kept and others are less well looked after. What they have in common are the protective structures of the front boundary and, in particular, their gates.

As with all property owners, there is an understandable wish to secure and to mark out the boundary of ownership. The gates of the properties, however, suggest something more.

Often with expensive looking structures, pillars, ornaments, security equipment and warning signs, the message is of secrecy and discouraging of any attention. That can, however, suggest to a passer-by that there is more behind the gates that could arouse curiosity.

The collection invites you to construct your own narratives of the world beyond the gates.
